Introduction

Halton Healthcare, in collaboration with Halton Public Health, is excited to announce the opening of a revolutionary seasonal clinic dedicated to providing Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) immunizations to infants. This pioneering Pediatric RSV Immunization Clinic will be located at Milton District Hospital, making it easier than ever for families to access this vital health service under Ontario’s new universal infant RSV prevention initiative.

What is RSV?

Respiratory Syncytial Virus is notorious for being one of the most severe respiratory illnesses affecting young infants and children, and this year marks a transformative change. Until now, free immunizations were limited to high-risk infants and premature babies. With the launch of the new provincial program, all newborns and infants born after January 1, 2024, will be eligible for free RSV immunizations, along with high-risk toddlers under two years old.

Why is RSV a Concern?

RSV is incredibly prevalent, with many children encountering it by their second birthday. It spreads easily through respiratory droplets and contaminated surfaces. Although RSV may only cause mild symptoms in older children, infants and toddlers face a significantly higher risk of severe complications.

Eye-Opening Statistics

Between 30% to 40% of pediatric hospitalizations during fall and winter at Halton Healthcare are RSV-related. A staggering 70% of infants hospitalized for RSV have no additional risk factors besides age. Approximately 2% of infants will require hospitalization for RSV during their first year. The newly available immunization provides an impressive 80-90% protection that lasts for up to six months!

About the Immunization

The one-time immunization, known as Beyfortus, is a safe antibody treatment designed to prevent severe RSV infections. Shortly after delivery, newborns can receive this vaccine while still in the hospital. For infants under 12 months or high-risk children aged 12-24 months, immunizations are accessible through their primary care providers or directly at Halton Healthcare’s specialized RSV clinic. The clinic has already begun offering vaccinations to newborns since November 4, 2024.

Clinic Details

Opening on November 18, 2024, this public clinic is ushering in a new wave of protection for children. Parents can start booking appointments on November 11 by calling 905-203-7937. The clinic will operate Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on weekends from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Located on the north side of Milton District Hospital, families can enter and exit through Lot 2, and no OHIP card is required!

Conclusion

The impact of the eligibility change is anticipated to be profound, significantly reducing hospital visits among young children and improving overall pediatric health in the community. This landmark initiative not only aims to safeguard our youngest citizens but also provides peace of mind for parents navigating the hazards of RSV.
