A Fresh Look for Google Account Management
In a thrilling overhaul, Google is transforming the Account switcher found in the top-right corner of its first-party apps into a stunning fullscreen interface. Gone are the days of those cramped floating windows; this redesign offers an impressive, spacious experience reminiscent of the web version.
What’s New in the Fullscreen Experience?
Now, when you tap to switch accounts, you’ll be greeted with your email prominently displayed right at the top, followed by a larger circular avatar and a friendly "Hi, [name]!" accompanied by a button to "Manage your Google Account." The account switcher will quickly guide you to the options for switching accounts, adding a sleek flow to the process.
Thanks to the new Material 3 Expressive design, users can enjoy a vibrant palette of Dynamic Colors that make the space pop. Most Google apps primarily use the switcher for just that—switching accounts—but some, particularly within the Workspace suite, offer a more comprehensive navigation menu that includes essential settings.
Keep Getting Lost in Fullscreen?
However, the transition to fullscreen hasn’t come without its critiques. Some users are expressing dissatisfaction with the loss of spatial context when switching accounts, feeling like they’re ripped from the current app experience. Thankfully, you can still bypass this fullscreen view by swiping up or down on the corner switcher, keeping a bit of continuity.
The Apps Transforming with This Update
As of now, 11 popular Google apps have embraced the fullscreen switcher redesign on Android, including:
- Google Docs
- Google Drive
- Google Home: Help, Feedback
- Google Keep
- Google Maps: Features like Incognito mode, Your Profile, Timeline, Location sharing, Offline maps, and more.
- Google News: Manage Notifications, My Activity, News settings, and Help & Feedback.
- Google Sheets
- Google Slides
- Google Tasks: Settings, Help & Feedback.
- Google Translate: Get access to Saved transcripts, History, Downloaded languages, Settings, and Help & Feedback.
- Google Wallet: Explore Wallet tips, Payment setup, and more.
- Gmail: Although it's the pioneer for this redesign since December 2024, its rollout has been limited, leading to some inconsistency.
What’s Next?
As Google continues to refine the experience across its apps, users can expect a more streamlined interface that still retains the spirit of each individual app. Will this redesign enhance your productivity or disrupt your workflow? Only time will tell!
