Flu Season and the Importance of Vaccination
As flu season approaches, health experts are urging everyone, especially high-risk individuals, to get vaccinated. The acting chief public health officer of the territory, Andre Corriveau, shared his personal story of battling the flu back in 1982, an experience that left him bedridden for ten long days. "I promised myself I would never get it again," he recalls, noting that since then, he has made it a point to get the flu shot every year.
Commitment to Health
On November 5th, Corriveau continued his commitment to health by receiving both the flu and Covid vaccines at Centre Square Mall. While he acknowledges the possibility of still contracting illness, the vaccines have certainly helped him stay healthier over the years. "My last experience with Covid six months ago was mild—just a two or three day thing," he said, crediting his regular boosters for the manageable symptoms.
Disappointing Turnout Rates
Despite the push for vaccinations, last year saw disappointing turnout rates for flu shots in Yellowknife. "We saw that over 50% of high-risk individuals participated, while general population engagement was only around 20-25%," he explained. This highlights a critical need for increased awareness and vaccine participation as we enter a season fraught with potential illness.
Anticipating a Flu Spike
Corriveau noted that while flu cases have been low thus far, that could quickly change as the holiday season approaches. "In the Northwest Territories, and across Canada, we typically see a spike in cases post-Christmas parties due to gatherings and travel," he warns. January is famously packed with flu cases, with another surge often occurring right after March break.
