Just last Sunday, a survey across 427 local stations revealed an average price of $1.76 per litre—marking a staggering increase of 12.6 cents in just one week!

According to experts from GasBuddy.com, a looming refinery shutdown in California is playing a significant role in this unexpected price hike. Patrick De Haan, GasBuddy's head of petroleum analysis, indicated that most provinces across Canada have witnessed rising gas prices, with British Columbia leading the charge.

Is Relief on the Horizon?

But don’t despair just yet! De Haan hints that relief might be on the way. "As we approach the switch to winter gasoline, we could see prices drop later this month, provided oil prices remain stable and local issues begin to settle. To add some optimism, OPEC+ has announced plans to boost oil production starting in October, which could help keep prices in check for a longer period."

It's worth noting that while gas prices have jumped, they are only slightly higher than last year. On Sunday, prices were 3.1 cents per litre up compared to the same day a year ago, but a notable 9.1 cents increased compared to just a month prior.
