York Police in Hot Pursuit of Convicted Offender

York Regional Police are on the hunt for Chengyuan Chad Li, a 27-year-old from Markham, Ontario, who has vanished after cutting off his court-mandated ankle monitor. Li was previously convicted of engaging in sexual activities with a minor and was awaiting sentencing.

The Crime That Led to Capture

Back in May 2023, Li was found guilty of obtaining sexual services from someone under the age of 18, alongside charges of failing to comply with a judicial release order. The court disclosed that he engaged in illicit activities with a minor in June of the same year at a location near Don Mills Road and Parkway Forest Drive.

A Bold Escape Before Sentencing

While awaiting his court date, Li was fitted with a GPS ankle monitor to ensure compliance. However, on July 22, 2025, he cut the device off and went underground. Just weeks later, on August 14, a judge sentenced him in absentia to a hefty five-year prison term.

Currently, a warrant for Li’s arrest has been issued, yet police have been unable to locate him. The authorities have released his image to the public and are appealing for any leads regarding his whereabouts.

New Charges Awaiting His Return

In light of his escape, Li now faces additional charges, including failing to comply with a judicial release order and mischief under $5,000. Police have urged Li to seek legal counsel and turn himself in to avoid further legal complications. They also caution the public that anyone helping him could face criminal charges as well.
