Mark Carney is currently pursuing a pivotal role as Canada’s Prime Minister, but five years ago, he was on the verge of a very different path—it almost led him to the presidency of Shopify.
After departing from his esteemed position as the governor of the Bank of England, Carney received a tempting offer from Shopify, as revealed by Craig Miller, a former chief product officer at the e-commerce giant. In a recent LinkedIn post, Miller reminisced about the hour-long interview he conducted with Carney in 2020, expressing how he was thoroughly impressed and believed Carney was the right fit for the job.
However, Carney opted against taking the helm at Shopify, instead choosing a leadership role at Brookfield Asset Management. The presidency of Shopify ultimately fell to Harley Finkelstein, a member of the company's early staff who continues to excel in that role.
Miller described Carney as "genuine, thoughtful, and wicked smart," using his platform to support Carney's political ambitions.
Shopify, which began as a tech startup in 2006, has since transformed into one of Canada’s wealthiest publicly traded companies, boasting a staggering market cap of around $125 billion, second only to the Royal Bank of Canada. The platform is designed to empower entrepreneurs to create and manage online retail businesses.
Earlier this year, Carney bid farewell to Brookfield and all of his other executive roles to head the Liberal Party’s leadership race. By March, he had succeeded Justin Trudeau, generating waves of political enthusiasm. He recently called for a snap election, scheduled for today, April 28.
With a proven history leading the Bank of Canada through the 2008 financial crisis and steering the Bank of England during Brexit, Carney emphasizes his extensive economic expertise, advocating for reduced government spending and addressing U.S.-related economic threats. Miller noted, "He offers a steady hand in tumultuous times," a sentiment echoed by many looking for stability.
Other Shopify executives have also publicly shared their political stances. CEO Tobias Lütke labeled Carney as a "great candidate" but voiced concerns over the Liberal Party’s direction. Meanwhile, COO Kaz Nejatian has thrown his support behind Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre.
