Jeff, who once taught explosive theory to military engineers, has now set his sights on combating climate change through sustainable agriculture.

A Unique Call to Serve

Reflecting on his decision to join the military, Jeff shares a moment that changed everything. Missing the school bus on 9/11, he watched the tragedy unfold on live TV, igniting a deep-seated desire to help others. "I genuinely don’t know why I joined," he admits, "but I felt an overwhelming need to serve. Now, that purpose drives my fight against climate change."

From Soldier to Scientist: A Journey of Discovery

Residing in North River with his wife Christine and their children, Jeff has embraced a life steeped in nature. Their historic farmhouse, surrounded by open yards and old trees, has become a nurturing environment not just for his family but also for his curiosity about the natural world. "We spend a lot of time outdoors, appreciating what we once took for granted in the military," he reflects.

Learning from the Best in the Field

Jeff's transition into academia has been supported by many mentors, including Dr. Jin Yue, who guided him through the Help Centre, and Dr. Alex Martynenko, who now supervises his master's work on drying technology for medicinal plants. His passion for learning was evident in the classroom, where his inquisitive nature and sense of humor left a lasting impression on his instructors.

Raising the Next Generation of Environmental Advocates

Although Jeff didn't grow up interested in plants, his childhood surrounded by gardens sparked a newfound passion. This love for nature resonates with his children, who often accompany him to the greenhouses. "Sharing this journey with them has been incredibly rewarding," he says, highlighting their eagerness to learn.
