Jessica's Transformation Journey
Jessica McBride, a dedicated mother of four, transformed her life in ways she never imagined. After weighing close to 300 pounds following the birth of her third child in 2015, McBride realized drastic changes were needed—not just for herself, but for her family. "I knew I had to be there for my three little girls, and to do that, I needed to prioritize my health," she shared.
The Start of a New Path
With a determination that overwhelmed initial doubts, McBride embarked on a weight-loss journey that saw her shed nearly half her body weight in just six months through dietary changes. Initially dabbling in high-intensity interval training (HIIT), she discovered her affinity for running—a sport she had avoided for years due to childhood insecurities.
Overcoming Childhood Insecurities
"As a child, I experienced discouragement from a gym teacher who belittled my running abilities. I internalized those words, believing I could never be a runner," McBride recounted. Nevertheless, her family’s athletic background sparked her motivation. With a dad who's a triathlete and a mom who enjoyed long-distance running, Jessica decided to break free from past limitations.
Building Strength and Confidence
“At 33 years old, building strength became my focal point. I followed a couch-to-5K program, steadily gaining confidence,” she said. "I wanted to show my daughters that they shouldn't allow others' opinions to shape their views of themselves. Leading by example was vital."
Racing and Beyond
Her dedication quickly bore fruit as she completed her first marathon in Red Deer just one year after she began running. Soon after, races in Banff and Edmonton followed. Yet, the thrill of 5K and full marathons wasn't enough—she yearned for greater challenges, which led her into the exhilarating realm of ultramarathon running.
Exploring the Limits
"There has to be more," McBride reflected. "What I love about long-distance running is that the limits are defined by me." Her transition was rapid; within four months of her first marathon, she tackled an 80-kilometer race at the Whistler50 and subsequently attempted a grueling 100-kilometer challenge.
Finding the Sweet Spot
“Running 100K is my sweet spot where I can still enjoy the pace and experience without completely exhausting myself—although there’s always that risk,” she joked. Proper nutrition, understanding one’s body, and at least two years of conditioning training are crucial for anyone considering this level of competition, she advised.
Balancing Life as a Mother
As a mother of four—including a newborn son—McBride has successfully balanced her rigorous marathon training with familial responsibilities. "A supportive partner is essential," she noted, appreciating her husband's active involvement in family life while she trains. Additionally, her mother's help has allowed her the time needed for long runs.
A Global Ambassador
This month, McBride will represent Canada at the International Association of Ultrarunners' 100 km World Championship in Bangalore, India. The tropical climate presents its own challenges, but McBride is ready. "I’ve been preparing for the heat with sauna sessions and indoor runs in winter gear to boost my endurance," she explained with a smile.
Chasing Dreams
On the eve of this important race, McBride shared her competitive spirit and numerous aspirations. “Before I turn 40, I promised myself I would run for my country. Now, at 33, I'm fulfilling that dream,” she beamed.
Inspiring Others
Her inspiring journey serves as a strong reminder that self-belief is key to transforming one’s life. “Anyone who is healthy and willing to commit can become a runner. It’s all about believing you can,” McBride emphasized, encouraging others to embrace the sport.
Support for Aspiring Runners
With resources available through the Association of Canadian Ultramarathoners, she motivates aspiring runners to take the plunge. "If you’re willing to put in the work, I wholeheartedly believe you can achieve your goals. You have my support!"
