Police Concerns Over Late-Night Safety

Authorities warned that any furniture left out during high-risk late-night hours could be misused as weapons. Police licensing officer Andy Manhire stated unequivocally, "Any furniture that's left can be used as weapons." This alarming statement led the North Somerset Council's licensing subcommittee to side with the police, effectively quashing the restaurant owner's request to keep the tables out overnight.

Defending the Tables

Despite the concerns, Ms. Michael defended her establishment, highlighting its long-standing operation since 2010 without any reported incidents of anti-social behavior involving furniture. The heavy picnic tables, purchased just this summer, were intended for the pedestrianized area on Regent Street, but the council's restrictions hindered their overnight use.

Contrary to police claims, Ms. Michael emphasized the tables' sturdiness, boasting that each weighs about 100kg (220lbs), making them incredibly difficult—if not impossible—to throw. She noted that lighter tables are in use at a nearby restaurant, Bistrot Pierre, but these are situated on private property and fall outside the council's jurisdiction.
