Allegations Against Paul Schrader

In a shocking turn of events, acclaimed filmmaker Paul Schrader has found himself at the center of sexual assault and harassment allegations made by a former assistant. The individual, referred to as “Jane Doe,” has claimed that Schrader not only sexually assaulted her but also created a hostile work environment over her tenure as his assistant from May 2021 to September 2024.

Legal Settlement and Claims

Despite reportedly agreeing to a confidential settlement in February of this year, recent court documents filed in New York State Supreme Court state that Schrader allegedly reneged on the agreement. Jane Doe's attorney, Menaka Fernando, issued a statement asserting, “Ms. Doe is simply seeking to enforce the settlement agreement between the parties resolving her sexual harassment and sexual assault claims.

Incident at Cannes Film Festival

The allegations revolve around an incident at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival in May 2024, where Doe claims Schrader forcibly trapped her in his hotel room. According to her motion, he “grabbed her arms, thrust his face into hers to kiss her against her will, and further restrained her” in a desperate attempt to keep her inside the room until she managed to escape.

Defense from Schrader's Attorney

Schrader’s attorney, Phillip Kessler, has denied these claims, suggesting the interactions included two kisses during nights of drinking — one at Cannes and another earlier in their acquaintance — countering that Schrader withdrew after his advances were not reciprocated.

Pattern of Misconduct Alleged

Additionally, the motion uncovers a pattern of misconduct, alleging Schrader used his significant power over Doe—who is 52 years younger than him—to subject her to a sexually charged atmosphere filled with intimidation and humiliation. One disturbing incident detailed in the court documents alleges that Schrader opened the door to his hotel room completely unclothed except for a bathrobe, making inappropriate comments about his physical state while Doe was packing his bags in a state of fear.

Termination and Follow-Up

Further complicating the matter, Emails exchanged between Schrader and Doe reportedly acknowledge that his behavior was “unwelcome and offensive,” and it appears that Doe was eventually terminated once she refused his advances.

Current Status and Legal Proceedings

After enduring months of distress, she opted to pursue legal representation and reached what she believed to be a settlement agreement this past February. However, just weeks ago, Schrader's counsel informed her that he would no longer be adhering to this agreement, leading Doe to file her recent motion in court.

Impact on Industry and Privacy Concerns

Schrader is currently attending the Cannes Film Festival to promote his latest film, ”Oh, Canada,
