Major Traffic Disruption Following Overnight Crash
A fiery crash has left a significant stretch of westbound Highway 401 in Scarborough closed, causing major disruptions for commuters during Thursday's morning rush hour.
According to Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Sgt. Kerry Schmidt, the incident occurred around 1 a.m., when a tow truck hauling a tractor-trailer crashed into a crash cushion designed to protect the express and collector lanes. The harrowing collision caused the tractor-trailer to roll over and ignite in flames.
Injuries Reported and Charges Filed
The driver of the tow truck sustained injuries but is expected to recover; they were transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening conditions. Following the accident, the driver has been charged with careless driving.
Road Closures and Traffic Updates
Currently, the westbound collector lanes and the transfer to the express lanes are closed from Morningside Avenue to Neilson Road. Additionally, the northbound Neilson ramp leading to westbound Highway 401 is off-limits as well.
Authorities have stated that they hope to reopen the affected area by 10 a.m. However, commuters are advised to seek alternative routes and anticipate delays as clean-up and investigation efforts continue.
