As we gathered one last time at Brewery Bay with two of our closest friends, it felt bittersweet—a celebration of memories entwined with change. The beloved restaurant, cherished by locals for years, is gearing up for a new chapter as it merges with the Couchiching Brewery, just a stone’s throw from Lake Couchiching. The historic Brewery Bay building is set to be reborn as "Seto," an exciting multi-functional restaurant, café, and international grocery store. With Jenna French at the helm—known for her success with Rustica—the future looks bright for downtown Orillia.
For many of us, Brewery Bay has been a cornerstone of our community since its initiation by Steve Clarke over three decades ago. It was an evolution from the memories we made at the Shangri-La Garden Restaurant—a quaint Chinese eatery that was as charming as it was nostalgic. While we lamented the loss of the Shang, the transition to Brewery Bay felt right, especially as it tapped into the literary legacy of Stephen Leacock, resonating with the spirited revival of Orillia’s downtown.
Brewery Bay wasn’t just a place to eat; it was a sanctuary for laughter and camaraderie. After long days or celebrating special moments, we found comfort in its familiar embrace. The atmosphere was filled with clinking glasses and heartfelt conversations, reflecting the essence of community. On one memorable day, we discovered a plaque above our usual table that read “Press Box,” a nod to our connection to the local newspaper, The Packet & Times. It was small gestures like these that showcased Clarke’s commitment to honoring local culture, complete with personalized mugs and art adorning the walls.
Brewery Bay was a pioneer, bravely introducing its outdoor patio in the face of lingering opposition—a move that not only invigorated Mississaga Street but also inspired other businesses to follow suit. The restaurant's spirit of philanthropy shone through annual charity fundraisers, transforming the venue into a gathering spot for goodwill.
Like its predecessors, Brewery Bay evolved into more than just a dining establishment; it became a symbol of community spirit. Despite the toll of time and usage, it transcended the physical, weaving itself into the narrative of Orillia's heartbeat. The true measure of success often goes beyond profits, and for many, Brewery Bay was a triumphant embodiment of belonging and connection.
As we bid farewell to this Orillia gem, we’re left with a treasure trove of memories and an eager anticipation for Seto. In a town that’s constantly reinventing itself, one can only hope that the spirit of Brewery Bay will continue to inspire, bringing together old friends and new in the same joyous way. Here’s to new beginnings while holding onto the past that shaped us. Wouldn’t you want to be part of the next chapter?
