Extreme Weather Causes Major Flooding Across the Greater Toronto Area: Are You Safe on the Roads?
The Greater Toronto Area (GTA) is reeling from the effects of a torrential downpour that has resulted in widespread flooding and dangerously hazardous driving conditions. With heavy rainfall and thick fog still lingering, local authorities are urging residents to exercise extreme caution. However, relief is forecasted with warmer temperatures set to arrive by Thursday afternoon.
Meteorologist Bill Coulter from CP24 provides a silver lining amidst the weather chaos, stating, “The morning showers will ease, and we’ll enjoy brighter skies as temperatures rise to a remarkable 18°C later today.” This shift in weather could potentially help alleviate some of the flooding issues, but residents are still advised to stay vigilant.
As of Thursday morning, several key roadways have been shut down due to the intense flooding. Bayview Avenue, which was earlier closed from Pottery Road to the Rosedale Valley ramp, has now been “fully reopened,” according to city officials. However, many roads, like the northbound Highway 427 ramp at Rexdale Boulevard, remain inaccessible.
Brampton has also not escaped the deluge; Steeles Avenue East and Kennedy Road South have experienced significant flooding, prompting emergency crews to conduct water rescues. One person was hospitalized with minor injuries, underscoring the dangerous reality of the situation. In addition, Peel police have reported closures at Clark Boulevard and Folkstone Crescent due to rising waters, with a submerged vehicle found on Intermodal Drive.
Dangerous weather conditions don’t stop there. A dense fog advisory is still in effect, leading to difficult visibility for drivers. OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt warns of the perils that heavy standing water can pose: “That flooding, that ponding really can catch drivers by surprise. Going too fast can easily cause hydroplaning, resulting in loss of control of your vehicle.” He emphasizes the importance of cautious driving, especially in such unpredictable conditions.
Authorities are urging the public to steer clear of shorelines, rivers, and streams, as the situation could worsen with more precipitation predicted in the coming days. As the GTA grapples with these extreme weather challenges, residents must prioritize safety both on the roads and at home.
Stay updated on the weather conditions and ensure that your loved ones are informed. While this may be a brief respite from the storms, vigilance is key in the face of nature’s unpredictability.
