Exploring the Cosmic Depths: Are There Hidden Planets in TESS Systems?

In an exciting new study, researchers have turned their attention to seven planetary systems discovered by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), aiming to discover if these cosmic neighborhoods might be harboring additional, yet unseen planets.

After thorough analysis, scientists found that five out of the seven targeted systems—namely HD 15337, HD 21749, HD 63433, HD 73583, and LTT 3780—exhibit significant potential for undiscovered planets to exist in the space between the known celestial bodies. This indicates that these systems are relatively spacious and not crowded with planets.

On the contrary, in the case of the TOI-1670 system, the gravitational forces exerted by the two already identified planets appear to effectively close off the possibility for any intermediary planets to quietly orbit in the gaps. In the most complex case, TOI 421 has proven to be a puzzle for astronomers.

Simulation studies show that introducing an Earth-mass planet into the TOI 421 system between the existing planets leads to catastrophic orbital instability nearly all the time. Specifically, only about 1.1% of the scenarios tested maintained a stable orbit over a million-year timeframe, effectively ruling out the likelihood of a third planet sharing that space. However, the researchers emphasize that while a new planet seems improbable, it cannot be completely eliminated as a theoretical possibility.
