The Vision for East Park

The vision for a stunning new park in Vancouver is finally gaining momentum! On November 4, 2023, the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation officially approved designs for the first phase of what is being hailed as 'East Park.'

Nestled south of Science World and hugging the expansive False Creek, this park will breathe new life into the area, reaching into the popular Olympic Village. The project first emerged nearly two years ago, aimed at transforming a largely unused piece of land that presently features a basic grassy area and a parking lot.

After extensive public consultations earlier this year, the park board has successfully combined the best elements from two proposed concepts for the inaugural phase. Board chair Brennan Bastyovanszky expressed enthusiasm about the project, stating, “The designs introduce access to natural areas and large open spaces to support events as well as a variety of casual uses. I can’t wait to see the first phase of the East Park project come to life.'

What Features Can We Expect?

Dubbed a 'new waterfront destination,' the park is set to boast a range of appealing features. The first phase will primarily consist of a central lawn flanked by trees, perfect for community gatherings and casual picnics. Additionally, the park will include a serene 'songbird tree grove,' designed as a peaceful retreat with seating areas among the plantings.

Fitness enthusiasts will be delighted to know that the park will also incorporate a 'flexible active zone' tailored for various fitness programs. Cyclists and pedestrians can look forward to dedicated walking and cycling paths that seamlessly connect to the seawall and the Central Valley Greenway, which links Vancouver to neighboring Burnaby.

Notably, following community feedback, Ontario Street will remain open—a key decision that reflects the city’s commitment to listening to resident concerns.

What’s Next for East Park?

Construction for Phase 1 is slated to commence in late 2026, with an estimated completion by late 2028. The total estimated investment for this initial phase stands at approximately $12.25 million. But what about the future? The timeline for Phase 2 hinges on the Expo Deck Deconstruction project, which is vital for opening up additional shoreline areas. A contract worth $4.5 million for this deconstruction was awarded this past summer.

When Phase 2 is underway, the intent is to transform the area revealed by the deck removal into a verdant habitat brimming with biodiversity.

Stay tuned for further updates as Vancouver’s waterfront evolves into a vibrant oasis for residents and visitors alike! This exciting development doesn’t just promise a park—it signals a commitment to enhancing the community’s connection to nature and recreation. Don't miss out on this transformative journey!
