Introduction of The Barn

Surrey is about to get a lively makeover with the introduction of a brand-new country bar named "The Barn," set to open in the former location of The Taphouse. This club, known for its vibrant ambiance, is gearing up for a soft launch this week under the leadership of Owen Coomer, the Chief Operating Officer of The Taphouse Modern Taverns.

Coomer shared his enthusiasm about the rebranding: "We're creating a new brand, and I want it to feel really exciting and special for people when they come in. We've received a lot of positive feedback already, and the community is clearly eager for this new venture."

The Venue's History

The Barn will occupy a space that has a rich history, previously hosting The Mirage dance club starting in 1997 and later transforming into The Taphouse in 2014, which was a local favorite for its live music and social vibe. However, the past year has proven challenging, as Coomer explained, "We ended up losing money last year, and we saw a staggering $930,000 dip in revenue compared to the prior year. The hospitality sector is facing significant hurdles, leading to numerous restaurant closures throughout Canada."

Transition from The Taphouse

In September, The Taphouse attempted to reinvigorate its audience by booking live bands, but declining crowds forced the owners to rethink their strategy. With the closure of The Taphouse announced on December 31, 2023, the stage was set for this exciting new chapter.

"We're excited to welcome you into this new space. Prepare for something truly one-of-a-kind that we're certain will blow you away! We can't wait to build a brand-new family atmosphere in this incredible venue," Coomer stated in the farewell to Taphouse patrons.

Renovations and Future Plans

Currently, the venue is undergoing renovations that will significantly alter its appearance, yet due to the impending development of a 22-storey tower approved by Surrey city council in 2023, the renovations will not be extensive. Coomer expressed optimism about the potential for The Barn to become the premier country bar in the area, citing a lack of similar options nearby.

The Barn's Unique Concept

"The Barn is set to capture that country spirit, bridging the vibe of places like Gabby's, Roosters, and Boone County. Our goal is to create a space that allows for live country music on Saturdays and fun DJ nights complete with line dancing on Fridays," he added.
