In a groundbreaking achievement, the European Space Agency's Hera spacecraft has successfully captured stunning images of one of Mars' enigmatic moons, Deimos, during its swift passage by the red planet. The probe, which was executing a gravity-assist maneuver, is on its ambitious journey to explore two asteroids situated over 110 million miles (177 million km) away.
The Hera spacecraft, traveling at an astonishing speed of over 20,000 mph, utilized a range of advanced instruments to snap photographs of both Mars and its diminutive moon, Deimos—an irregularly shaped body approximately 8 miles wide. This mission has provided astronomers with their first clear glimpse of the moon’s lesser-seen far side, observing it from a distance of about 620 miles.
Michael Kueppers, the mission scientist for Hera, expressed excitement about this milestone, stating, 'While we’ve tested these instruments before during our departure from Earth, this is the first instance we’re deploying them on a distant moon that holds many mysteries we are yet to unravel.'
Deimos is particularly intriguing because it is tidally locked to Mars, always presenting the same face towards the planet. The origins of this moon remain uncertain; some theories suggest it could be a fragment from a colossal impact involving Mars, while others propose it may have been an asteroid that fell under the influence of Mars' gravitational field.
The recently captured images show Mars appearing in light blue hues, and Deimos emerges as a dark silhouette at the bottom of the frame. The images also highlight key features of the Martian surface, including the bright Terra Sabaea region located near the equator, the notable 280-mile-wide Huygens crater, and the equally significant Schiaparelli crater. To the right, viewers can identify part of the vast Hellas Basin, recognized as one of the largest impact craters in our solar system.
