In a significant development for residents of Baie Verte, Newfoundland and Labrador Health Services has announced the introduction of a Virtual Emergency Room (ER) at the Baie Verte Peninsula Health Centre. This innovative service aims to enhance emergency medical care availability during specific periods when local physician coverage is limited.

When is it Available?

The Virtual ER will be operational during the following times:

From Sunday, September 29 at 8:00 a.m. until Monday, September 30 at 8:00 a.m.

From Tuesday, October 1 at 8:00 a.m. until Wednesday, October 2 at 8:00 a.m.

From Thursday, October 3 at 8:00 a.m. until Friday, October 4 at 8:00 a.m.

Residents can feel assured that while a healthcare professional will be on-site at the health centre, physicians or nurse practitioners will also be accessible via video, ensuring that patients receive comprehensive care akin to that of a traditional emergency room.

What is a Virtual ER?

Virtual ERs are designed to provide 24/7 emergency care coverage, particularly in areas facing challenges in securing local physicians. Patients attending the Baie Verte Peninsula Health Centre's ER during these virtual periods can expect the same level of attention and service as they would in a regular emergency setting. Consultation through video technology allows healthcare providers to diagnose and treat patients effectively, minimizing the need for urgent travel and maximizing medical care accessibility.

Additional Services for the Community

For residents facing non-emergent medical issues and lacking a family physician, NL Health Services operates the Health Hub. It's accessible Monday to Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and on weekends from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. For assistance, you can contact the Gander Medical Clinic at 709-381-0112 or the Killick Clinic in Grand Falls-Windsor at 709-292-8404. Do note that longer wait times may be expected both in-person and during virtual appointments.
