Connecting with Youth in Meaningful Ways
For Mariah Morris and Sabine Huss, the heart of youth mental health lies not in strict therapy plans but in genuine connections and creative engagement. Mariah, an Occupational Therapist at Foundry Vancouver Granville, passionately shares, 'I’ve always been drawn to people’s stories and what truly matters to them.' For her, mental health work provides a unique opportunity to understand her clients deeply, their aspirations, and what fuels their passions.
Sabine Huss, a Social Work Case Manager, echoes this sentiment. She stumbled into this field through her diverse studies in history and literature but found her true calling in the resilience and creativity of the youth she supports. 'The young people I work with are among the most creative and resilient I've met,' she says.
Meeting Youth Where They Are
Mariah divides her time between Foundry and Covenant House in downtown Vancouver, playing a pivotal role in establishing occupational therapy services. 'One of the best parts is that we’re not stuck behind a desk,' she reveals. Engaging with youth in community spaces—whether it’s a stroll, a coffee, or a game of basketball—fosters trust and understanding. 'It changed everything when a youth taught me how to play,' she fondly recalls, highlighting the mutual learning that occurs.
Sabine’s role is just as dynamic and relationship-centric. 'There’s no typical day for us,' she chuckles. From walk-in counseling sessions to organizing community outreach, their mission is flexible and adaptive, centered on forming genuine connections.
The Power of Teamwork
Mariah emphasizes the importance of her team. 'The hardest part is when things are out of your control, but the brilliance and kindness of my colleagues keep me going,' she says. Sabine couldn’t agree more, affectionately calling her team the ‘best team ever,’ noting their lighthearted office tradition of ‘Pup of the Day,’ where dogs come in to boost morale.
Despite the challenges—especially amidst the ongoing toxic drug crisis—Sabine finds purpose in watching youth thrive after lengthy struggles. 'Seeing someone succeed after years of hardship is a powerful reminder of why we do what we do,' she says.
Changing the Youth Mental Health Narrative
Both Mariah and Sabine have witnessed a significant shift in conversations around mental health. 'There’s more openness now,' Mariah observes. Sabine adds that youth are often defined by more than just their diagnoses—they are artists, friends, and resilient individuals full of potential.
Taking Care of Their Own Mental Health
Being in the mental health field, Mariah and Sabine prioritize their own well-being. 'I focus on spending time with loved ones and pursuing joy,' Mariah shares. Sabine emphasizes the importance of self-care, encouraging healthy habits and laughter among her team as essential tools for maintaining their mental health.
Advice for Aspiring Mental Health Workers
If you’re considering a career in mental health, Mariah suggests exploring various options, shadowing professionals, and asking questions to find your fit. 'Providence Health Care is a fantastic place for those driven by compassion and social justice,' Sabine adds.
