Captured by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter in 2008, what some initially perceived as trees are actually dark brown streaks on melting pinkish sand dunes. These formations were photographed during the Martian spring, when the Sun breaks down a layer of frosty carbon dioxide ice, exposing the darker sand beneath.

"When dark sand shifts down a dune, it can create streaks that resemble trees—except these 'trees' cast no shadows," NASA explained, revealing the fascinating mechanics behind this visual illusion.
