A harrowing fire in a Vancouver neighborhood left eleven individuals without a home after flames erupted from the basement of a detached residence early Monday morning.

E-bike Battery Responsible for the Inferno

Firefighters rushed to the scene at 2900 block of East Georgia Street around 5:45 a.m. According to Matthew Trudeau of Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services, the blaze was ignited by an e-bike battery charging in the basement.

Injuries Reported Amidst Chaotic Escape

Fortunately, all residents managed to escape unharmed, but two individuals suffered injuries and were transported to the hospital in stable condition, Trudeau confirmed.

E-bike Overload: A Growing Concern

Investigators noted multiple e-bikes and batteries being charged in the home, with Trudeau stating, At least one of them failed, causing the fire to quickly spread and ignite surrounding materials.

Terrifying Sounds and Billowing Smoke

Neighbor Chanel Carson recounted the terrifying moments leading up to the chaos. There was a loud rumbling and the sound of breaking glass around 5:40 a.m., Carson said. The smoke was everywhere, and we all called the fire department immediately.

Carson expressed concern for the displaced residents, many of whom rely on e-bikes for their delivery jobs. It’s really unfortunate, she noted.

Safety Precautions Urged for E-bike Users

Trudeau emphasized the importance of correctly maintaining e-bike batteries, stating, They are safe when handled properly. But if someone modifies or uses an aftermarket battery, that’s when the danger arises. He urged residents to replace damaged batteries only with manufacturer-approved models.

Highlighting a troubling trend, Trudeau revealed that last year, emergency services responded to approximately one e-bike fire each week, and the rates are on track to continue this alarming pattern.
