The highly acclaimed World’s Largest Dinosaur, affectionately known as Tyra, will officially close its doors in December 2029, as announced by the Drumheller and District Chamber of Commerce.

A Strategic Shift for the Community

In an exciting twist, the closure is part of a strategic shift to reinvigorate the local economy and support community businesses rather than simply a farewell to the beloved landmark. Over its 25-year reign, Tyra has garnered attention from millions, standing tall at 26 meters and weighing an impressive 65,770 kilograms. Since its installation, it has welcomed over 2 million visitors, making it a significant driver of tourism for Drumheller.

Reasoning Behind the Closure

The decision comes after discussions surrounding Tyra’s limited life span, coinciding with the expiration of the building lease in 2024. Although the Chamber secured a five-year lease extension, they decided to close the attraction at the end of the renewed term. “While this announcement is a difficult one, it’s also an opportunity for the Chamber to refocus on our core mission: supporting local businesses and advocating for their growth,” said Chamber President Lana Phillips.

Lasting Memories with Tyra

Visitors are urged to take advantage of the remaining years to create lasting memories with the iconic dinosaur. Through the World’s Largest Dinosaur Fund, proceeds generated from admissions and gift shop sales have bolstered numerous local initiatives, underscoring Tyra's impact on community development.

Plans are currently in motion to celebrate Tyra’s legacy, with the Chamber exploring various ways to honor the memories and stories that have blossomed around this towering figure. Heather Bitz, Executive Director of the chamber stated, “We’ll be looking for ways to honor the memories and community impact that Tyra has created over the years.”
