Reflecting on his breakthrough role in Amistad, Hounsou stated that although he earned a Golden Globe nomination, he was overlooked for an Oscar, suggesting that industry biases were at play. "They thought I just came off the boat and was plucked off the streets by Steven Spielberg for this film," he lamented. Hounsou emphasized that despite his work in notable films, he struggled to gain the respect he deserved.

Concerns About Systemic Racism

Though he acknowledged some progress in representation, Hounsou expressed deep concern about the entrenched nature of systemic racism in Hollywood. "This conceptual idea of diversity… still has a long way to go. Systemic racism doesn’t change like that anytime soon," he noted.

Throughout his illustrious career, Hounsou has appeared in numerous box office hits, including Gladiator, Captain Marvel, Charlie's Angels, Blood Diamond, and most recently, A Quiet Place: Day One. However, he admitted, "After 30 years… I'm still struggling financially to make a living. I’m definitely underpaid." Despite his accolades, he believes that the financial compensation does not equate to the level of success he has achieved.

Madowo expressed disbelief that a prominent Black actor, who was one of his childhood heroes, faced such financial adversity. To this, Hounsou responded, "That’s a sign for you that systemic racism is not something that you can deal with lightly. It’s so deep-seated in many aspects of our lives, and you don’t overcome it without concerted effort."

Reflecting on his journey, Hounsou shared his aspirations for his work to inspire pride among his people in West Africa. He articulated a mission to transform narratives surrounding African culture and representation on a global scale. "I came to California with a compelling need to do something for my continent… I just hope that I have contributed to changing the narrative about our people and the continent," he affirmed.
