Devastating Russian Shelling Claims 13 Lives and Leaves Many Injured in Zaporizhzhia

In a tragic incident on Wednesday afternoon, fierce shelling by Russian forces in the southern Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people and injuries to 32 others, according to local authorities.

Regional leader Ivan Fedorov described the attack as "cynical," noting that the assault took place in broad daylight, with two guided aerial bombs targeting residential buildings. Eyewitness accounts and emerging footage depict harrowing scenes of a high-rise ablaze and multiple vehicles engulfed in flames.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the strike, urging international allies to exert pressure on Russia for its acts of terror. The Russian military has yet to comment on the incident. Tensions have soared since President Vladimir Putin initiated a full-scale invasion of Ukraine back in February 2022.

Fedorov reported that the shelling commenced around 16:00 local time (14:00 GMT). Initially, he indicated that "industrial infrastructure" was the target, but it soon became apparent that civilian areas bore the brunt of the assault.

Graphic images shared online captured the distressing aftermath. First responders were seen treating casualties on the roadside, while several vehicles burned nearby. In one disturbing clip, two minibuses were left with shattered windows, and casualties lay among the debris.

Zaporizhzhia's strategic position near the front line makes it increasingly vulnerable to such attacks, raising concerns about the safety of innocent civilians caught in the crossfire.

President Zelensky, addressing the nation, stated, "There is nothing more cruel than launching aerial bombs on a city, fully aware that ordinary civilians will suffer." He passionately appealed to Ukraine's allies for enhanced support, emphasizing that achieving a lasting peace is only possible through strength and unity.

In light of this tragedy, a day of mourning has been declared across the Zaporizhzhia region for Thursday, as the community grapples with the aftermath of this devastating attack.
