In a heart-wrenching turn of events, Leigh Ann Biety and her family are finally settling down in Canmore, Alberta, after fleeing the raging Eaton fire that razed their home in Altadena, California. The family’s devastating loss marks a vivid reminder of the ever-looming threat of wildfires that have increasingly plagued many areas, particularly in California.

Leigh Ann, originally from Edmonton, had moved to Los Angeles nearly two decades ago to chase her dreams in the film industry. The disaster struck with terrifying speed; what began as a mere flicker outside her window quickly escalated into a full-blown inferno. “I just noticed out the window, just the smallest flicker of light,” Leigh Ann recounted to Global News. “It could have been like a candle on a cake.”

While she was observing that unsettling glow, her husband, Denton Biety, was out purchasing batteries after the local utility shut off power in their neighborhood due to the fire threat. By the time he returned home, the flames had transformed from a distant flicker to an imminent danger. “It’s gone from this little flicker, you know on the other side of the hill, to now what’s roaring in these winds,” Denton stressed.

A frantic packing ensued, with Denton’s mother, visiting from Florida, doing her best to keep their two young sons calm amid the chaos. They had a mere 14 minutes before they had to flee. Opting to traverse the city to stay with friends, they quickly realized that offers of short-term accommodations were not a viable solution—those friends lost their home just hours later. “Four hours later, their house was gone,” Denton noted.

In the aftermath, the Bietys found refuge in various hotels accommodating other fire evacuees. There, they experienced an outpouring of support from the community. An incredible gesture included a woman bringing gifts for their sons, just days after one of the boys celebrated his birthday.

Denton returned to their property shortly after the evacuation to see the extent of the damage, only to find that very little had survived. “It was still smoking; everything had burned completely to the ground, except for two chimneys standing there,” he recalled, his voice tinged with sorrow.

Despite the overwhelming loss, Leigh Ann and her family have a strong connection to Canmore, where they frequently visit family and take in the breathtaking vistas. As they navigate the challenging road ahead, they await news from their insurance company and plan to eventually return to Altadena, eager to find a new place they can call home. “We’re hoping to get that sleep back, and then open our laptops to figure out what’s next,” Leigh Ann said with resilience.

This tragic incident underscores the urgent need for wildfire preparedness and community support in the face of natural disasters, reminding us of the fragility of life and the importance of coming together in times of crisis. The Biety family's tale serves as both a cautionary tale and an inspirational story about hope, resilience, and the kindness of strangers.

Stay tuned for updates on their journey to recovery and how they plan to rebuild their lives from the ashes.
