Surprising Twists in ‘Destiny 2: Edge of Fate’
After an intense two-day gaming marathon, I’ve finally conquered the lengthy campaign of ‘Destiny 2: Edge of Fate,’ the inaugural chapter in the thrilling new ‘Fate’ saga—marking a bold departure from the decade-spanning Light and Darkness narrative.
While this new saga may attract fewer players, those who dive in will uncover gems that are far more intricate and engaging than the early, often confusing years of the original Destiny. Unlike before, it’s evident that Bungie has crafted a compelling storyline with purpose.
Mixed Feelings About Gameplay and Environments
I still find Kepler to be an uninspiring planet, and the gameplay at times feels meandering, hampered by frustrating mechanics. But when it comes to the story? It’s nothing short of fantastic.
A Gripping Mystery Awaits!
It’s refreshing to encounter a Destiny mystery that left me completely in the dark. Even in ‘The Witch Queen,’ I had a hunch about Savathun's true connections with the Light. But in this new saga? I was utterly blindsided by the revelations.
Major Reveal #1: Ikora's Shocking Past!
Let’s talk spoilers. The first jaw-dropper? Discovering Ikora's identity before her time as a Guardian. It turns out she worked alongside Lodi at a Chicago department tasked with investigating alien activities. Lodi always knew her potential and reveals this—along with a fully animated cutscene—about two-thirds through the campaign.
The Nine played a twisted role in Ikora’s life, orchestrating her death so she could ultimately be revived by her Ghost, years later. This harrowing revelation takes a toll on her character, leading to an emotionally charged segment that, although voiced by a different actress due to a voice actor strike, still delivers a compelling performance.
Major Reveal #2: The Terrifying III!
The grand finale brings us face-to-face with III, a member of The Nine who holds pivotal information. Entering a space reminiscent of the shocking Pyramid reveal in ‘Shadowkeep,’ we’re confronted with the massive, floating, Lovecraftian form of III, whose tentacles intertwine with the black hole plaguing Kepler. It’s an intense sequence where we discover that our actions have been powering Drifter’s Haul for ages, culminating in III’s message: to avert disaster, we must ‘bind The Nine.’ This sets the stage for an exhilarating new era in the game.
A Storyline to Remember!
What can I say? This storyline might just be the best we’ve encountered in a Destiny expansion. The intricate mysteries, powerful voice performances, and colossal reveals make a strong case. While I wish the gameplay aligned with the narrative's brilliance, I sincerely hope Bungie retains this narrative team for future expansions—these stories are what truly drive Destiny forward.
