Destiny 2 is set for a monumental transformation with the introduction of Codename Frontiers, bringing an array of thrilling updates that will redefine player experiences. From a revamped release model to groundbreaking gameplay features and next-gen armor, here's everything you need to know!
Bungie first hinted at these significant changes in a recent blog post, outlining how Destiny 2 will evolve in late 2023 and beyond. If you're feeling a bit lost amid the details, no worries—we’ll break it all down for you!
New Release Model and Roadmap
In a game-changing shift, Bungie is overhauling how expansions are delivered in Destiny 2. Gone are the days of a single large expansion each year; we will now see two medium-sized expansions released every six months. This transformation includes the elimination of the previous episodic content model, which has been replaced by four major updates per year that are completely free. This approach makes Destiny 2 more accessible for both newcomers and veteran players alike.
Each expansion promises to introduce an exciting new destination along with story missions, weapons, and gear. Bungie has hinted at a diverse range of gameplay styles, suggesting potential elements drawn from roguelikes and Metroidvania exploration.
“Our ambition is to break the mold of what Destiny can be,” stated Bungie. “We are exploring options like non-linear campaigns and unique formats to enhance your experience.” The first expansion, Codename Apollo, allows players to navigate through a narrative with multiple threads, empowering them to forge their paths through the story.
Roadmap Overview:
- Summer 2025: Codename Apollo expansion and Codename Arsenal Major Update
- Fall 2025: Codename Surge Major Update
- Winter 2025: Codename Behemoth expansion and Major Update
- Spring 2026: Major Update
Welcome to The Portal
With the upcoming Codename Frontiers, Bungie is introducing a new activity hub known as "The Portal." Serving as the central access point for all core activities, this feature replaces the traditional Director, enhancing navigability amidst a streamlined interface. Each season, The Portal will refresh to spotlight new content and offer easy access to the latest opportunities.
Inside The Portal, you'll find various activity categories, such as:
- Solo Ops: Quick, solo-friendly missions designed for 1-3 players, utilizing a dynamic enemy spawning system that adapts based on player performance.
- Fireteam Ops: The go-to spot for three-player content, including classic Strikes.
- Flashpoint Ops: Teams of six can undertake these larger-scale challenges reminiscent of previous modes.
- Pinnacle Ops: High-level challenges will be regrouped here, featuring Dungeons and Exotic Missions.
Notably, the popular Gambit mode will not be part of The Portal at launch, as Bungie continues to explore its future integration.
Raids and Dungeons: A New Era
As part of the codename Frontiers changes, Bungie is also revamping the endgame content structure regarding raids and dungeons. Moving forward, we can expect one raid and one dungeon annually. While this may seem like a reduction in quantity, Bungie assures quality will increase substantially.
Structure Going Forward:
- New raid launches at the beginning of each year alongside the first expansion.
- The subsequent Major Update will enhance the raid, introducing fresh challenges and mechanics.
- A new dungeon will debut in the second expansion of the year, complete with an expanded loot pool.
- The yearly finale will incorporate a legacy event featuring previously released raids and dungeons.
Furthermore, raids will now incorporate a "Feats" system, allowing players to customize their difficulty level by adding modifiers. This incentivizes taking on tougher challenges for better rewards.
Challenge Customization and Rewards
One of the most compelling features in Codename Frontiers is the introduction of Challenge Customization. This allows players to dictate the difficulty of PvE activities by introducing new enemy abilities and increasing power and combat challenges. Coupled with the new Reward Rating system, this encourages players to take on more formidable tasks for tangibly better loot.
Next-Gen Armor and Overhauled Loot System
A significant revamp is coming to the armor system, with every stat point now counting toward performance. The stat cap will increase from 100 to 200, providing players access to new advantages such as additional grenade charges.
Armor will come with specific archetypes targeting focused stat distributions. For instance, Brawler Armor will excel in melee stats, while new stat types like "Special Ammo" are also being introduced, enhancing gameplay diversity.
In an exciting twist, Armor Set Bonuses will provide unique perks depending on how many set pieces players are equipped with, similar to weapon origin traits.
The Future of Destiny 2
Bungie's Codename Frontiers is brimming with innovation, reaffirming the studio's commitment to evolving Destiny 2 into an ever-improving experience. With a plethora of new features, updated gameplay mechanics, and expanded content, the future looks brighter than ever for Guardians.
