A New COVID-19 Variant Emerges in Canada

More than five years after the COVID-19 pandemic began, a new strain called XFG is now the most prevalent in Canada, introducing troubling new symptoms.

What You Need to Know About the XFG Variant

The SARS-CoV-2 variant XFG, nicknamed the "stratus" variant, has rapidly become dominant since this summer, comprising a large share of samples in Canada's federal monitoring efforts.

Public Health Ontario indicates that XFG is projected to dominate the province's sequenced tests by the end of September.

The nickname was coined by University of Guelph biologist T. Ryan Gregory, who previously identified a dominant strain as "nimbus." These names reflect types of clouds, highlighting the variant's unique nature.

Gregory emphasizes that while XFG falls under the Omicron umbrella, it represents a highly diverse group, with this variant and Nimbus being among the more notable subvariants to emerge since 2023.

Distinct Symptoms of the XFG Variant

Recent reports indicate that, in addition to typical COVID-19 symptoms, XFG can inflict severe throat pain, described as "razor blade" soreness due to its replication in the throat lining.

According to a Yale University post, treatment may involve over-the-counter lozenges, saline sprays, and increased hydration, but a COVID-19 test and medical consultation are advisable if symptoms worsen.

Evaluating the Risks of XFG

While caution is always necessary, current assessments classify the XFG variant's risks as low. The World Health Organization noted in June that initial evaluations showed minimal new health risks associated with XFG.

It’s important to note that existing COVID-19 vaccines remain effective against this variant, helping prevent symptomatic and severe cases.

In Canada, wastewater monitoring indicates moderate COVID-19 activity, particularly high in Manitoba, Newfoundland, and Labrador. In the first week of September alone, over 1,600 cases were detected nationally, with a positivity rate of 8.5% and one hospitalization per 100,000.

Stay Vigilant Against COVID-19

With the emergence of the XFG variant, continued public health measures such as ventilation, air filtration, and wearing properly fitted N95 masks in crowded spaces remain essential.

Stay informed, stay cautious, and prioritize your health as we navigate the evolving landscape of COVID-19.
