As the fall vaccination campaign begins, Quebec is facing a concerning rise in COVID-19 infections, with the provincial public health reporting a startling positivity rate of 21.7%. This means that nearly one in five tests conducted is returning positive for the virus, a significant increase from just 2.1% recorded earlier in the summer.
Health Canada has recently approved three new vaccines specifically targeting the KB.2 subvariant of Omicron. Among these are updated mRNA vaccines from industry leaders Moderna and Pfizer, alongside a protein-based option from Novavax. These advancements come at a crucial time as health officials prepare for what could be a challenging season ahead.
In the week leading to September 15, Quebec reported 48 new deaths attributed to COVID-19, bringing the total number of lives lost during the pandemic to a staggering 20,553. The cumulative number of cases since the beginning of the pandemic has also surged, now exceeding 1.49 million. Current hospitalizations reveal that 1,765 individuals are hospitalized due to COVID complications.
As cases rise, Quebec's immunization committee is urging those most at risk to get vaccinated. High-risk groups recommended to receive the vaccine include adults aged 60 and older, individuals with compromised immune systems, pregnant women, healthcare workers, and residents of long-term care facilities (CHSLDs). While vaccinations are open to other groups, the committee suggests that the benefits might be limited for those at lower risk.
Experts are also forecasting that this coming season might see more severe complications from COVID-19, echoing concerns about the virus's evolving nature. Public health measures are still being discussed to mitigate the potential surge of infections as we head deeper into fall and winter, traditionally known for increasing respiratory illnesses.
Many Quebecers are eager to receive their booster shots to better protect themselves and their families as the temperatures drop and indoor gatherings become more common. As the vaccination campaign gears up, health officials emphasize the importance of getting vaccinated to curb the spread of the virus and keep vulnerable populations safe.
