Discover Circus Needs a New Home
The vibrant community of aspiring aerialists in Nelson is on the hunt for a new home as they face the looming deadline to vacate their beloved Discover Circus venue by October 2025. Led by the dynamic executive director, Jake Jacobs (often known as Jake the Lady), this unique organization is determined to find a spacious, high-ceilinged location that can accommodate its specialized circus arts programs — aiming to be relocated by summer to launch an exciting new year of programs next September.
Requirements for the New Space
The specific requirements for the new space are quite clear: a ceiling height of at least 22 feet, with a preference for 25 feet or more, and an expansive open floor plan. The new landlord must be open to adding specialized rigging installations to meet the needs of the group's aerial activities.
“It’s important to implement lots of safety rigging for our aerialists,” Jacobs notes, emphasizing the uniqueness of their setup which complicates their search. Additionally, an engineer will be required to meticulously calculate weight loads to ensure the installations are secure and safe for the young performers.
The Art of Aerial Performance
The art of aerial performance generates immense forces during routines, as artists drop or swing through the air. This dynamic weight requires careful performance engineering to prevent accidents.
“With aerial acts, many factors come into play, such as how many hanging points can safely attach to a structure, its strength, and environmental conditions,” explains Jacobs, highlighting the precision required in their craft.
A Legacy of Training and Performance
Since its inception in 2015, Discover Circus has provided aerial skills training to around 350 students each season, attracting a diverse age group, from enthusiastic children to adventurous adults. The current venue, hidden away on the third floor downtown, often amazes newcomers who learn of its existence for the first time.
"The joy on their faces when they discover the circus is priceless," Jacobs shares.
Inspiring Performances for the Community
Showcasing their talent in annual events, the most recent performance took place at the Capitol Theatre in May, leaving audiences in awe as students displayed their stunning aerial skills on hoops, trapezes, and silks.
A Unique Sanctuary for Students
Discover Circus offers an impressive 44 classes per week, led by 11 dedicated instructors. For many students, the circus serves as a sanctuary from life’s stresses.
"It's like magic walking into the building," says 12-year-old student Navah de Chezet. "All my worries just disappear."
Fellow student Marlea Stachoski, 13, adds: “The moment I see the silks and hoops, all my stress just melts away. It gives me a sense of freedom.”
Pride in Unique Talents
Young aerialists like 10-year-old Kyren Gagnon take pride in their unique talents. “Silks aren’t common, so being able to perform these tricks is a big deal for me. It’s like freedom every time I’m in the air.”
Conquering Fears and Finding Strength
The thrill of conquering fears is evident among the students. Navah recounts the challenges of performing aerial drops, which are initially daunting. “The first time is terrifying, especially when attempting side stars — an aerial side-flip. But once you master it, there’s nothing like it.”
12-year-old Esmae Hassel remembers her early days of fear when starting with Discover Circus: “Now, as I practice, drops feel easier, and it’s such a rewarding experience to complete a challenging skill.”
Discover Circus: A Hub for Creativity
According to Jacobs, Discover Circus stands as a platform for creative expression and self-discovery. “It’s all about stepping outside of comfort zones, taking risks, and finding personal strength through movement,” she explains.
The Future of Discover Circus
The search for a new venue is not just about a physical space; it’s about nurturing the dreams and aspirations of countless young performers who find joy, freedom, and community in the art of circus.
