In a surprising twist, Chris Columbus, the man who brought the magical world of Harry Potter to life on the big screen, is scratching his head over the upcoming HBO series. After catching a glimpse of new set photos featuring Hagrid, he’s asking, "What’s the point?"

Columbus, who directed the beloved 'Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone' and 'Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets,' shared his thoughts during an appearance on The Rest Is Entertainment podcast. The series, which is currently in production in the UK, seems to echo what has already been done, particularly in its depiction of the giant gamekeeper's attire.

He noted that the costume worn by Nick Frost, who plays Hagrid in the series, closely resembles the very design created for Robbie Coltrane in the original films. Columbus remarked, "I thought everything was going to be different, but it’s more of the same. It’s all going to be the same." This comment shows his puzzlement over why the story needs to be retold.

While he finds this resemblance flattering, Columbus admits there’s a sense of déjà vu surrounding the project. "Part of it is really exciting, so I’m excited to see what they’re going to do with it," he concluded, which reflects his mixed feelings about the new adaptation.

Columbus also touched upon broader themes as he discussed Rowling's controversial views on transgender issues, labeling them as "very sad." Despite those complexities, he clarified that he doesn’t feel envious of HBO’s chance to reinterpret the series. "It’s time to move on. I’ve always had issues with the idea of franchises. I feel like I’ve done it… I’m really proud of those films, and I’m moving on."

As fans eagerly await the debut of the HBO series, Columbus' reflections may spark further debate about revisiting beloved stories that have already made a significant impact on pop culture.
