Trends or Anomalies?
As we dive into Week 3 of the CFL, it's all about deciphering the early-season trends versus those shaky anomalies. Teams like Toronto, Ottawa, and Hamilton have stumbled out of the gate with 0-2 records, while the Alouettes, Roughriders, and Stampeders are riding high with perfect 2-0 starts. Remember 2024? The Bombers began their season at 0-4 while Calgary held a modest 2-1 record, yet by season's end, the Bombers transformed their fortunes. So, as tempting as it is to judge by wins and losses, let's not get too carried away just yet!
Montreal Alouettes vs. Edmonton Elks
**Thursday, June 19 at 9:00 PM ET** Montreal's defense, under Noel Thorpe, has been nothing short of spectacular, allowing only 14 points per game. However, they face a formidable challenge in Edmonton, who, after a bye week, are eager to secure their first win. Quarterback Davis Alexander may have his ups and downs, but this season he’s showing signs of being an MVP contender. He must keep Elks star Tre Ford under control, whose explosive plays could wreak havoc on the Alouettes. Still, I believe Montreal will emerge victorious.
Saskatchewan Roughriders vs. Toronto Argonauts
**Friday, June 20 at 7:30 PM ET** After facing injury challenges yet still clinching wins, the Roughriders head to Toronto in a short week. While the Roughriders offense, led by the dynamic AJ Ouellette, is brimming with potential, Toronto has been struggling without Chad Kelly. Nick Arbuckle's shaky start, with four interceptions already, adds pressure against a solid Riders defense. It looks grim for Toronto; I’m picking Saskatchewan to take the win.
Ottawa REDBLACKS vs. Calgary Stampeders
**Saturday, June 21 at 4:00 PM ET** Calgary, surprisingly holding a 2-0 record following a massive offseason shift, faces an Ottawa team that desperately seeks its first win after a lackluster start. Despite Ottawa's promising roster, turnovers and a struggling offense have hobbled them. Calgary's Vernon Adams Jr. is proving to be a capable leader, creating plays when it counts. Ottawa’s defense must step up, but I don't see the REDBLACKS turning the tide just yet. My pick: Calgary.
Winnipeg Blue Bombers vs. BC Lions
**Saturday, June 21 at 7:00 PM ET** The Bombers are buzzing with the return of Zach Collaros from suspension, ready to reclaim his spot as a game-changer. With standout Matthew Peterson leading the league in rushing, Winnipeg's offense still has firepower. While BC’s Nathan Rourke is likely to improve, the Bombers won’t let their guards down easily. Expect a tighter matchup than last week, but I believe Winnipeg will complete the series sweep.
