Shocking Daylight Theft in Hamilton
In a chilling incident captured on doorbell surveillance, a thief has been caught red-handed stealing a senior's gold necklace during a distraction theft in the Hamilton area.
The Bold Crime Unfolds
The brazen theft occurred at approximately 3:30 p.m. on September 8 in Flamborough, a rural community near Hamilton. The video shows a woman greeting the elderly homeowner at the door, where she engages in what appears to be a friendly encounter, complete with a hug and kiss.
However, while exchanging pleasantries, the suspect cunningly swapped the victim’s genuine gold necklace for a counterfeit piece, showcasing a calculated method often used in such crimes.
Police on the Hunt for the Thief
Hamilton police are now actively seeking the public’s assistance in identifying the suspect, described as approximately 5'7” tall and around 40 years old. She was last seen driving a dark vehicle with noticeable front-end damage.
Surging Distracted Theft Cases
This alarming event highlights a troubling trend, as Hamilton police reported a significant spike in distraction theft incidents this year. In 2021, only nine cases were recorded, but that number jumped to 54 in 2024, with 43 reported just between January and August.
Stay Alert: How to Protect Yourself
Authorities urge the public to be cautious around individuals who may insist on hugs or present jewelry gifts, and to ensure valuables are secured. It's also advised to avoid wearing expensive jewelry when alone in public places.
Community Response and Safety Measures
The community is encouraged to stay vigilant and report any suspicious behavior, especially as these distraction tactics grow increasingly sophisticated. Residents should spread the word about this theft strategy to protect one another.
