Chaos in Calgary: Woman Charged Following Standoff
In a gripping incident that unfolded in northwest Calgary, a 32-year-old woman has been charged after a tense standoff with police that saw shots fired. The drama began on August 28 when Monica Gonzalez was with a male suspect who had a Canada-wide arrest warrant due to a violent past.
As officers tried to apprehend them in the 500 block of Crescent Road N.W., the duo fled the scene, leading to a harrowing chase. The man attempted to force his way into a home by firing shots, but when that failed, they broke into another residence nearby.
With the tactical unit swiftly on the scene, the standoff escalated as the suspect fired multiple shots at the officers from within the home. A shelter-in-place advisory was issued for nearby residents, keeping them on high alert for several hours.
Miraculously, no officers were injured throughout this intense ordeal. After approximately 80 minutes, Gonzalez surrendered to law enforcement, but tragically, it was later confirmed that the male suspect had fatally shot himself inside the residence.
Investigations revealed that Gonzalez and the suspect had no ties to the area where the standoff occurred. Consequently, she has been charged with one count of break and enter, and is set to appear in court on October 8.
Staff Sgt. Ben Lawson from the Calgary Police Service's organized crime unit remarked on the volatile nature of such incidents. "These suspects are often determined to avoid capture, which can lead to unpredictable and dangerous situations," he said, emphasizing the department’s commitment to public safety.
As the case continues, the Calgary police are maintaining jurisdiction over the investigation, which has been deemed outside the scope of the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team. This situation serves as a stark reminder of the complexities and dangers police face during high-stakes arrests.
