In a recent media statement, the Calgary Police Service has alerted local residents about the strict regulations surrounding personal fireworks use, following an overwhelming surge of over 150 complaints in just a short period.

These calls significantly increased around the time of the Diwali and Bandi Chhor Divas celebrations, although police emphasize that fireworks can pose serious safety risks within city limits.

"Fireworks and pyrotechnics are strictly prohibited," the statement clarified. "Only trained and certified professionals with a valid fireworks permit are allowed to use them within the city." Community safety inspector Bartosz Wilostowski expressed appreciation for the cultural significance of these celebrations but shared concerns regarding the volume of calls and the strain on police resources.

"The sheer volume of complaints is concerning," he stated.

The response from law enforcement escalated when fireworks usage was reported in close proximity to Calgary's airport, prompting discussions about temporarily shutting down an active runway to ensure safety for travelers and aviation.

"The safety of our communities is paramount, as is the safety of those operating and traveling on aircraft in the area," emphasized Calgary Police Insp. Garth Kowalyk. “While education is our first step, we will not hesitate to enforce the rules against those who blatantly endanger others."

Interestingly, many individuals the police spoke to were unaware they were breaking the law. Wilostowski noted that "fireworks disturb not only residents but also pets, leading to widespread distress during their use."

To combat these issues, Calgary’s community service peace officers are collaborating with business safety peace officers to monitor the sale of fireworks, which is also illegal without a permit within city limits.

The Calgary Police highlighted that utilizing fireworks without the appropriate permit does not just violate local bylaws but also contravenes the National Fire Code (Alberta), which can lead to serious consequences.

Here’s a quick breakdown of potential fines for violators:

Potential Fines

Possession of fireworks without a permit: Minimum fine of **$500**

Use of fireworks without a permit: Minimum fine of **$250**

Sale of fireworks without a permit: Minimum fine of **$250**

As Calgary experiences dry weather conditions, the Fire Department's deputy chief of risk management, Pete Steenaerts, stressed, "Fireworks require a safe, non-combustible area and responsible handling to mitigate potential fallout. It's crucial that all Calgarians respect these regulations and leave fireworks to the professionals."

Residents who witness fireworks being used without permits are strongly encouraged to report the activity by contacting 311.
