As the world’s leaders gather for the G7 summit in the scenic Kananaskis mountains, downtown Calgary became a hub of passionate protest on Sunday. Hundreds of demonstrators took to the streets, waving flags, chanting slogans, and distributing pamphlets, all in hopes of catching the attention of the global leaders.

Though the summit venue is closed to the public, protest organizers have established designated zones in Calgary and Banff, ensuring that their messages reach the leaders through live feeds displayed on large screens at the summit.

Traffic flowed slowly but the atmosphere remained largely peaceful as voices rose in unison against various pressing issues.

A Stand Against Unwanted Influence!

Among the protesters, Carol and Mike Schmidt stood proudly holding a Canadian flag. "We will never become the 51st state!" Carol declared, expressing a firm rejection of any attempts to undermine Canadian sovereignty. "We cherish our democratic freedoms, and we want to make that loud and clear today!"

Lesley Boyer echoed this sentiment, portraying the protest as a pivotal moment in history. "My grandfathers fought against fascism, and comments about becoming a state disturb me deeply. This is our chance to say in a distinctly Canadian way: 'Go away, Trump! We're not interested!"}

Environmental Concerns Take Center Stage

Environmental issues and Indigenous rights were also prominent in discussions among protesters. Josie Augr from the Bigstone Cree First Nation emphasized the vital importance of water, declaring, "Water is life! Without it, we cease to exist. Climate change threatens this essential resource, and we owe it to future generations to protect it."

Jared Blustein, from Calgary Climate Talk, voiced skepticism about the leaders' commitment to meaningful climate action. "While climate change is on the agenda, I doubt there will be significant moves to address it. We're facing increasingly severe impacts, from extreme weather to rising global temperatures—we must unite to safeguard our planet for future generations."

Voices for Global Justice and Peace!

The protests weren't limited to local issues; they also highlighted global conflicts. A large pro-Palestinian demonstration disrupted traffic as protestors sought to draw attention to ongoing struggles. Meanwhile, a group advocating for an independent Kashmir, amidst rising tensions between India and Pakistan, also gathered at Calgary city hall. Asif Nazir urged, "We need the right to self-determination, no matter the nation we're linked to!"

Amidst the fervor, members of the Revolutionary Communist Party criticized the G7 leaders, stating, "These leaders have led us into a crisis, from living costs to environmental disasters. Capitalism has hit a dead end, and it’s time for the working class to reclaim control!"

As the world watches, Calgary showcases a vivid tapestry of dissent, echoing hopes and demands that span beyond borders—each voice striving for change, equality, and a sustainable future.
