A Storm Like No Other Strikes North Calgary

Calgary experienced a fierce hailstorm on Sunday evening that wreaked havoc across northern neighborhoods. Residents found themselves in the midst of chaos as rain, ice, and strong winds combined to create a scene reminiscent of a natural disaster.

Eyewitness Reports Roll In

Communities such as Thorncliffe quickly took to social media, sharing startling images and videos of loonie-sized hailstones, demolished gardens, and uprooted trees. The storm, which barreled in from the northwest at around 7:45 p.m., swept through the city at speeds of 50 to 60 km/h before dissipating around 8:20 p.m.

A Familiar Threat in Hail Alley

While shocking, such storms aren't entirely unprecedented for Calgary. Christy Climenhaga, a scientist with Environment and Climate Change Canada, explained that the city lies on Alberta's notorious 'hail alley.' This geographical corridor is particularly vulnerable to hailstorms due to specific atmospheric conditions.

"Calgary's location makes it a prime area for hail formation, particularly in the northern parts of the city, which have faced numerous damaging storms in recent years," Climenhaga noted. The area has endured several catastrophic events, including an August 2024 storm that caused an astounding $3.25 billion in damages.

Localized Damage and Miracle Survivors

Despite the storm's quick onset, communities felt its sharp impact. One resident shared online, "A chunk of my neighbor’s tree fell, and it's a miracle we still have power!" Another resident from Thorncliffe recounted being trapped in her vehicle during the tempest, noting significant damage to her home.

As communities begin the cleanup process, resilient residents are already banding together, ready to weather whatever the skies may bring next.
