On a sunny Sunday in Calgary, residents lined the streets of Kensington, passionately signing a petition opposing Alberta's separation from Canada. This grassroots effort, part of the Alberta Forever Canada initiative, reflects a growing discontent towards the provincial government's separation talks.

The Urgent Push for Unity

Led by former Progressive Conservative deputy premier Thomas Lukaszuk, the campaign aims to amass nearly 300,000 signatures by October 28 to trigger a referendum on Alberta's status within Canada. Kicking off in Edmonton on August 2, the initiative is on a tight schedule, requiring signatures from 20% of the electorate within a mere 90 days.

Calgarians Take a Stand

At the forefront was volunteer Faraz Anwer, welcoming a growing line of supporters. "We’re off to a very good start; hope is in the air," he remarked enthusiastically as the queue grew to over two dozen strong.

Among those waiting was Tara Ernst, who came after seeing the campaign on social media. "I want to send a clear message to Danielle Smith that I oppose separation from Canada," she stated emphatically. "People are upset and want their voices heard."

A Unified Message: 'Stop the Nonsense!'

Equally determined, Okotoks resident Jane Cada-Sharp expressed her sentiments succinctly: "The majority of Albertans do not want this, so stop all of the nonsense. Focus on real issues instead of this misguided distraction."

As more supporters joined in, Cada-Sharp noted the phenomenal turnout, asserting, "We’re going to crush that 296,000 benchmark—with a message to the UCP: enough is enough!"
