Kingston Fire: Positive Progress But Challenges Remain

Recent reports indicate that firefighting crews are making significant headway in tackling the substantial Kingston fire in Conception Bay North. Thanks to favorable conditions yesterday, no major growth has been noted in the blaze, a relief for all involved.

Although light winds created some smoky challenges, water bombers effectively focused their efforts on the western front of the fire. Ground teams, including crews from Ontario, have been busy managing flare-ups, particularly on Pickle Ridge, while air support has included powerful helicopters like the S61 and Black Hawks.

Paddy’s Pond Fire: Monitoring Hot Spots

The fight against the Paddy’s Pond fire continues as crews, including the St. John’s Regional Fire Department and Canadian Armed Forces, monitor and extinguish hot spots. Yesterday marked a productive day for firefighters, and all evacuation alerts linked to this fire have now been lifted.

Highway Reopening Amid Active Fire at Martin Lake

Great news for residents! As of 8:00 AM today, the Bay d’Espoir Highway is reopening to two-lane traffic, following a closure due to the Martin Lake wildfire. This crucial highway links the Connaigre Peninsula to the rest of the province.

However, while traffic is resuming, officials caution that the Martin Lake fire remains active, with ground and air crews tirelessly battling the flames.

Evacuations: Where Do We Stand?

Currently, evacuation orders are still in effect for several towns, including Small Point–Adam’s Cove and Salmon Cove. Other areas such as the Local Service District of Freshwater and Job’s Cove are under evacuation alerts.

Furthermore, access to cabin areas such as Rushy Pond Road and Martin Lake Road remains restricted due to ongoing firefighting efforts.

Stay Informed!

As the situation develops, it's essential for residents to stay informed and heed evacuation orders and alerts. Make sure to check for updates throughout the day as more information becomes available.
