The Children’s Hospital at London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) has taken a bold step in public health by launching a specialized immunization clinic targeting Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) for eligible infants without a primary care provider.

Purpose

Located in the Paediatric Medical Day Unit, this new RSV Immunization Clinic aims to "bridge the gap" that exists for families who lack consistent primary healthcare access. According to Erin Fleischer, the dedicated nurse practitioner overseeing the program, this initiative is a crucial move towards promoting health equity in the community. "Our goal is to serve families who might not otherwise receive this vital immunization," Fleischer stated enthusiastically.

What is RSV?

RSV is a prevalent respiratory virus known for causing symptoms similar to the common cold, but it can escalate into severe and potentially life-threatening lung infections, particularly for infants and older adults. During the colder months, RSV, together with influenza and COVID-19, is responsible for significant increases in emergency department visits and hospitalizations.

Immunization Details

The clinic utilizes Nirsevimab, a long-acting monoclonal antibody that grants immediate passive immunity against RSV. While this immunization does not completely prevent RSV infections, it has proven to reduce the risk of severe illness and hospitalization by an impressive 80%. In an important development, the Ontario Ministry of Health has now included this immunization in its coverage plan for all eligible patients in Ontario starting this fall.

Eligibility and Administration

From now on, infants born on or after January 1, 2024, who do not have a primary care provider, can attend the twice-weekly clinic to receive their immunization. Furthermore, Nirsevimab will also be administered to all infants born at LHSC during the respiratory illness season, along with eligible inpatients and outpatients at Children’s Hospital.

Maternal Vaccine Offering

In addition, LHSC’s Obstetrical/Gynecology Ambulatory Clinic offers a maternal RSV vaccine, Abrysvo, for expectant mothers who want to pass on antibodies to their babies before birth.
