In a stunning political move, former journalist Evan Solomon is expected to announce his candidacy for the Liberal Party in the upcoming federal election, according to reliable sources. This decision comes amid heightened tensions between Canada and the United States, particularly as President Donald Trump has made controversial remarks regarding tariffs and territorial claims on Canadian resources.

Solomon, who recently worked as the publisher for GZERO Media under the Eurasia Group, has a rich history in political journalism. Before taking on his publisher role in the fall of 2022, he served as a special correspondent for CTV News. However, he stepped down from that position just prior to Mark Carney's election as the Liberal party leader on March 9.

His broadcasting career spans multiple media outlets. Solomon hosted popular political programs such as CTV's Question Period and Power Play. Additionally, he had success with The Evan Solomon Show, a nationally syndicated radio program on iHeart Radio, and previously anchored CBC's Power & Politics and The House.

While his career has not been without controversy—Solomon was dismissed from the CBC in June 2015 following allegations of ethical violations related to art sales—he has consistently denied any misconduct. He argues that he did not consider his business dealings a conflict of interest and maintained that he never intended to leverage his journalist position for personal gain.

As the political landscape shifts, sources indicate a snap election is likely to be called on Sunday, intensifying the urgency for potential candidates. Although the date for the election has not yet been finalized—reportedly either April 28 or May 5—official announcements are anticipated soon. The House of Commons is scheduled to return from prorogation on March 24, paving the way for intensified political activity.

Recent polling data from Nanos Research indicates that the political race is tight, with the Conservative Party currently holding a narrow lead at 35%, just one percentage point ahead of the Liberals. This comes as a surprise, considering earlier in the year—before Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's resignation and Trump's controversial inauguration—the Liberals were trailing the Conservatives by more than 20 points.

Interestingly, national concerns reflect a significant focus on U.S. relations, with 26.8% of Canadians identifying it as their top issue, closely followed by jobs and the economy at 16.7%. Solomon’s entry into this charged political environment could redefine the way the Liberal Party approaches these pressing issues as they prepare for what could be an explosive election season.
