Four New Measles Cases Confirmed!
Alberta Health Services (AHS) has confirmed a concerning outbreak with four new cases of measles reported as of April 24, 2025. Residents are urged to take immediate action!
Are You at Risk?
If you were born in or after 1970 and haven't received two doses of the measles vaccine, you could be at risk! AHS strongly advises anyone who visited specific locations during the outbreak to be vigilant about symptoms. Make sure to check your immunization records!
How Does Measles Spread?
Measles is incredibly contagious and can spread through the air quite easily. Early symptoms include a fever of 38.3°C or higher, accompanied by coughing, a runny nose, red eyes, and a distinctive rash. This rash typically shows up 3-7 days after the fever begins, starting behind the ears and on the face before spreading.
The Serious Side of Measles
The complications from measles can be severe, including ear infections, pneumonia, and even brain inflammation. Pregnant women, infants, and immunocompromised individuals face the highest risks. If you develop symptoms, stay home and call Health Link at 811 rather than visiting a healthcare facility.
Vaccination: Your Best Defense!
The measles vaccine is highly effective and is available for free in Alberta through the public health immunization program. The standard vaccination schedule recommends two doses: the first at one year of age and the second at 18 months. However, due to the current outbreak, early immunizations are being offered!
Infants aged 6 to 11 months can receive an early dose, but they should still complete the two routine doses once they turn one.
What to Do After Exposure?
If you think you've been exposed to measles, the vaccine can prevent infection if given within 72 hours. For high-risk individuals who can't receive the vaccine, immune globulin can also be administered within six days of exposure.
