Southern Ontario is gearing up for a winter wonderland as snow squall warnings remain in place this Saturday, with forecasts predicting up to 40 centimetres of snow in certain areas before the end of the weekend.
The regions around Lake Huron and Georgian Bay are particularly affected, as lake effect snow continues to create challenging conditions. Environment Canada has reported that while the snow may appear disorganized at first, it is expected to intensify throughout Saturday, potentially leading to significant accumulation by Sunday.
Could This Storm Break Records?
The snowfall totals could surpass expectations if the snow squalls linger over specific areas. A snow squall watch is also in effect for Kitchener and Waterloo, where local snowfall might exceed 15 centimetres. These rapid fluctuations in weather conditions—from clear skies to heavy snow within just a few kilometres—demonstrate the unpredictable nature of snow squalls, according to Environment Canada.
Hazardous Travel Conditions Ahead
Winds are anticipated to reach speeds of up to 60 km/h in some locales, leading to reduced visibility and potentially dangerous driving conditions due to blowing snow. With these rapidly changing circumstances, motorists are advised to exercise caution: reduce speed, be vigilant for tail lights ahead, and remain prepared to stop.
"Prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions," the weather service cautions, urging residents to stay informed.
Additional Warnings for Eastern GTA
To the east of the Greater Toronto Area, areas such as Peterborough, Pickering, and Oshawa will also see weather advisories due to strong lake effect snow blowing inland. Accumulations here are expected to range between five to ten centimetres of snowfall.
While the city of Toronto may experience some flurries this weekend, the anticipated accumulation is only around two centimetres, along with wind chill temperatures dropping to about -13 degrees Celsius. Fortunately, no weather advisories have been issued for Toronto as of now.
Keep Warm and Stay Safe!
This cold snap is predicted to stick around into Sunday, so ensure you’re bundled up if venturing outside. Expect flurries to wrap up by Sunday afternoon, though morning winds might still reach up to 40 km/h.
Prepare for a true winter experience, stay safe on the roads, and enjoy the beauty of Southern Ontario blanketed in snow—just don't forget to take care while out and about!
