‘Karate Kid’ Fumbles at the Box Office

Sony’s much-anticipated release, “Karate Kid: Legends,” has turned out to be a box-office disappointment. Originally projected to rake in $25 million during its opening weekend, the film's estimates have plummeted to around $21 million. Some reports suggest it could even dip as low as $19-20 million. With a budget of $45 million, the movie, which has been available in select international markets since early May, has managed to gather only another $26 million overseas, totaling its worldwide gross to approximately $47 million. While it may avoid significant losses, its fate will heavily rely on the following weekend's performance and audience feedback.

‘Lilo & Stitch’ Dominates the Box Office

In stark contrast, the buzz surrounding Disney’s live-action remake of the beloved 2002 classic, “Lilo & Stitch,” has propelled it to a staggering $63 million in its second weekend domestically. Although it faced a 57% drop from its opening, it excelled internationally, earning an additional $113.1 million overseas with just a 28% decline. This brings its global total to a remarkable $611 million, putting it on track to either approach or exceed the billion-dollar milestone by the end of its theatrical run.

‘Mission: Impossible’ Holds Steady

Meanwhile, “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” continues to perform well, netting an estimated $27.3 million domestically with a similar 57% drop. It has managed to secure $76.1 million internationally, marking only a 33% decline in its second weekend, contributing to a robust global total of $354 million.

Horror Thrills and New Releases

The horror film “Final Destination Bloodlines,” with a budget of $50 million, is also making waves, grossing an impressive $229 million worldwide, evenly split between domestic and international markets. This weekend, it amassed another $10.8 million domestically.

A24’s latest venture, “Bring Her Back,” debuted in fifth place with a solid $7.1 million, marking a promising start for this critically acclaimed horror flick.

‘The Phoenician Scheme’ Breaks Records!

However, the weekend’s standout success belongs to Wes Anderson’s “The Phoenician Scheme,” which achieved the highest grossing limited release of the year. The film garnered an impressive $570,000 from just six locations in New York and Los Angeles, averaging a jaw-dropping $95,000 per screen. With plans to expand to 1,500 cinemas next weekend, it’s set to make even more waves.
