Bo Bichette Set for Surgery on Injured Finger: What’s Next for the Blue Jays Star?

2024-09-25

In a significant blow to the Toronto Blue Jays, manager John Schneider confirmed that shortstop Bo Bichette will undergo surgery to repair a displaced fracture in his right middle finger. This unfortunate injury has already sidelined the 26-year-old as he was placed on the injured list last week, effectively ending his 2024 season. However, Schneider is optimistic, stating that Bichette “should be good to go” for Spring Training in February 2025.

Bichette's 2024 season has been plagued by injuries, marking the worst of his career. The two-time All-Star managed to appear in only 81 games, suffering from various injuries including calf strains throughout the year. When he did play, his performance was below his usual standards, with a disappointing batting line of .225/.277/.322 (70 wRC+). This starkly contrasts his career averages, where he boasted a lifetime slash line of .299/.340/.487 (127 wRC+) before this tumultuous season.

Before his injury struggles, Bichette was considered one of the most consistent players in the league, and his impressive track record led to speculation about potential trades prior to this year's deadline. Rumors circulated as the Blue Jays' postseason hopes dwindled; however, the organization hesitated to part ways with Bichette or fellow superstar Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Eventually, those discussions faded as injuries took center stage.

Looking ahead, the Blue Jays are aiming for a strong return to contention in 2025. Given Bichette's potential and the need for a robust roster, it appears unlikely that the team would entertain trading either him or Guerrero during the offseason. Despite the surgery, interest from other teams could remain high, especially since he’s expected to be ready for Spring Training.

In addition to Bichette's surgery, the Blue Jays are also addressing the health of outfielder Daulton Varsho. Following a recent rotator cuff repair procedure, it was confirmed that there were no further complications. While Varsho's surgery went smoothly, his availability for Spring Training remains uncertain. He is currently on a timeline that may allow him to be ready, but it’s contingent on avoiding setbacks during recovery. Varsho posted a modest performance in the 2024 season with a .214/.293/.407 line (99 wRC+) along with ten stolen bases, showcasing solid defensive skills in center field.

As the Blue Jays prepare for a crucial offseason, the health and readiness of their star players will be paramount in their quest to reclaim a competitive edge in 2025. Can the Blue Jays bounce back and make a significant impact next season? Only time will tell!
