In a major shift for the popular communication platform Discord, co-founder and CEO Jason Citron has announced he is stepping down. The company will welcome Humam Sakhnini, a former executive at Activision Blizzard and King, as its new CEO starting April 28th.
Citron, who will remain on the board and serve as an advisor, shared his thoughts in a heartfelt message to employees posted on Discord's website. He indicated a transformative phase for the company, stating, "The job of a CEO is constantly evolving. I’ve realized that it's time for me to literally 'hire myself out of a job.'"
During a previous chat on the Decoder podcast, Citron highlighted Discord's impressive growth, boasting around 870 employees and over 200 million monthly active users.
Sakhnini expressed his excitement for the new role, emphasizing the importance of staying true to Discord's mission of connecting player communities. He stated, "We’re still at the beginning of gaming’s impact on entertainment and culture, and Discord is perfectly positioned to play a central role in that future."
This leadership transition comes at an intriguing time, as reports suggest Discord could be looking into an IPO. Citron hinted at this future move, noting that hiring a seasoned executive like Sakhnini is a significant step towards that direction.
