TILLSONBURG - Get ready for a monumental celebration as the Annandale National Historic Site commemorates the bicentennial anniversary of the settlement that eventually evolved into the vibrant Town of Tillsonburg!
In a nod to its fascinating past, Kathleen Watkins, the Culture and Heritage Program Coordinator for Tillsonburg, shared some riveting facts about Dereham Forge. It all began on March 17, 1825, when George Tillson, a visionary entrepreneur, broke ground on the establishment. Originally aimed at creating an iron foundry, George soon faced a major setback—a lack of local iron resources. This obstacle didn’t deter him; instead, he shifted gears and embarked on a journey to create a flourishing milling empire that would lay the groundwork for the community we know today.
By 1872, settlers honored his contributions by naming the town Tillsonburg. "This community is a testament to resilience and innovation," remarked Watkins, emphasizing the importance of remembering our roots.
To kickstart the year-long bicentennial festivities, an open house event is happening today! The celebrations spirit invites community members to engage in a hands-on project: signing lincoln logs that will be used to construct a historical model of Tillsonburg, reflecting its appearance two decades after George Tillson's pioneering efforts. The grand unveiling of this model will take place on October 18 during the Founders Day festival at Memorial Park—a not-to-miss event for history lovers!
Join us today from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. for this exciting open house, which is completely free. Indulge in delicious cake and light refreshments while you connect with fellow residents. Don't miss this chance to contribute to the town's legacy and celebrate 200 years of history!
Mark your calendars for October 18—let's make history together and give a warm welcome to the next century of Tillsonburg!
