Toronto's Summer Concert Lineup Shines Bright
Toronto is gearing up for an electrifying summer filled with powerhouse performances from music legends like Oasis, Coldplay, and Stevie Nicks! But one name shines a little brighter for superfan Cynthia from Brampton—Barry Manilow!
A Lifelong Fan's Journey
Cynthia, a devoted Manilow enthusiast, can't contain her excitement ahead of the iconic singer's concert at Scotiabank Arena on May 31st as part of his "Last Concerts" tour. "I've played his CDs so much that some of them have worn out!" she shared with CTV News. With classics like "I Write the Songs," "Mandy," and "Copacabana" etched in her memory, Cynthia has already witnessed Manilow's magic live twice and has read all of his books. "It would be so thrilling just to see him. I would just die to go!" she exclaimed.
An Accessibility Challenge
However, excitement turned to frustration when Cynthia—who uses a mobility scooter, wheelchair, and walker—realized there were no accessible seating options available during ticket sales. "I was shocked when I found out there were no wheelchair accessible tickets," she recounted. An advocacy group, the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act Alliance (AODAA), highlighted the need for more accessible seating at concerts and events. AODAA Chair David Lepofsky emphasized the importance of equitable access, especially for older fans who cherish Manilow's legendary songs.
Breaking Through Barriers
The Scotiabank Arena's website states that only one percent of its fixed seating is designated for disabled patrons and their companions. Ticketmaster confirmed that accessible tickets were initially available but sold out quickly due to high demand.
The Dream Comes True
Fortunately, a happy ending awaited Cynthia! After CTV News reached out to Scotiabank Arena, they graciously located two wheelchair accessible tickets for her and her husband—completely free of charge! "I got tickets to Barry Manilow! I've died and gone to heaven!! I am so excited and just thrilled to pieces. I’m so thankful!" she joyfully expressed.
A Call for Change
As fans gear up for a summer of unforgettable performances, Cynthia's story serves as a powerful reminder of the vital need for accessible seating in venues across the city. Let's hope that future concerts will see a shift toward inclusivity—because everyone deserves the chance to experience the magic of live music!
