ATV Driver in Northern Ontario Faces Multiple Charges Including Threats Against Police

2024-09-24

In a shocking sequence of events in Goulais River, a 25-year-old man was charged with a slew of offenses after an ATV escapade that escalated into threats against law enforcement. The incident began on September 21, when officers from the Sault detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) spotted the suspect driving an ATV without a helmet — along with a passenger who also lacked proper safety gear — on Sand Bay Road.

The situation quickly intensified when the driver attempted to evade police by speeding past an OPP cruiser while visibly holding a liquor bottle. According to the police report, the reckless maneuver led to the ATV colliding with the cruiser’s front bumper, resulting in the driver losing control and flipping into a nearby ditch.

Authorities assessed the situation and noted signs of impairment in the driver, leading to multiple charges. These included impaired driving, refusal to comply with a demand, dangerous driving, failing to stop after an accident, failing to stop for police, driving without a helmet, and littering. The driver, who hails from the Batchewana First Nation, is set to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Sault Ste. Marie on October 21.

The drama didn’t end there. On September 22, just a day after the initial incident, the same suspect called the OPP detachment regarding a property issue. In a disturbing turn, he allegedly threatened to come to the station with a firearm and shoot the officers present, including the call taker he was speaking to.

Prompt action from the police resulted in his arrest later that day, and he now faces three counts of uttering threats. The suspect was held in custody and had a bail hearing on September 23, following which he was released.

This series of events raises significant concerns surrounding public safety, especially regarding the operation of ATVs under the influence and the alarming threat to law enforcement. The community remains on edge as the case unfolds, highlighting the importance of responsible behavior while operating vehicles and the serious ramifications that can follow reckless actions.
