If you've been hesitating to embrace Apple's new HomeKit architecture, it’s time to pay attention! Apple is about to give you a wake-up call that you won't want to ignore.
Initially launched in December 2022 with iOS 16.2, the revamped HomeKit promised a smoother and more reliable smart home experience, particularly for users managing a plethora of Matter or HomeKit devices.
However, the rollout wasn’t without hiccups. Users faced frustrating issues like disappearing devices, broken video streams, and failed invitations, prompting Apple to retract the initial update before reintroducing it with iOS 16.4 a few months later.
Now, while upgrading has been an option, that leniency is about to expire. Apple has announced that support for the old HomeKit framework will cease this fall, and to complicate matters, some users will be upgraded automatically!
A recent beta version (18.6) revealed a cautionary note: 'Support for your current version of Apple Home will end this fall. Some homes will be automatically updated at that time, while others must undergo a manual update. Act now to ensure your accessories, automations, and critical alerts aren’t disrupted!'
In simpler terms, if you’re clinging to the outdated system, consider this your final warning!
Apple hasn't specified who will be upgraded automatically—however, if your devices are updated with the latest software and auto-updates are switched on, you may already be on the new architecture without realizing it.
To confirm your status and avoid unwanted disruptions to your home automation, navigate to the Home app, then go to More > Home Settings > Software Update.
It's essential to understand that this updated HomeKit framework is a fundamental change that isn't compatible with older operating systems. Devices like older iPads or Macs running anything less than iOS 16 or macOS Sonoma might entirely lose access come fall.
Imagine using an antique iPad as a wall-mounted control center—it could soon become useless if you don’t act quickly!
